Sex Unwrapped was originally the name of a half day conference run for church leaders but has since become something much more. Traditionally, the church has tackled the issue of sex and all that encompasses rather inadequately and often, with judgement. However, we live in a society that is fuelled by sex. Sex is used in advertising, you can buy it off the internet as well as the top shelf, rape statistics have increased but convictions decreased, teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases have reached crisis point, the list goes on and we don’t have to look very far to see cheapened sex and its consequences in one way shape or form.

Yet the church continues to bury it’s head in the sand and believe largely that these problems only exist outside of its walls. Firstly, they don’t. There are people in churches who struggle with their sexuality, who have had abortions, been raped or sexually abused, couples whose relationship lacks intimacy, single people who are perhaps trying not to have sex in a relationship where they feel pressurised to do so and again so the list goes on. Secondly, even if these problems did not exist within our church, surely if a social problem is getting as bad as this one and we continue to ignore it we are failing in our responsibilities as Christ’s disciples if we do not respond. Our previous lack of confronting sexual issues in the church cannot continue-Jesus wants to bring healing, forgiveness, release and restoration but how can He do that if we do not turn to Him? Let’s unwrap sex and help God bring it back to what He created it as-a wonderful, delightful, enjoyable act of love.
